    Description

Coltrane, John. (1926–1967) Jones, Elvin. (1927–2004)
    "Coltrane" - Signed LP
    Autographed copy of the album
    Coltrane
, released on Impulse! Records in 1962, signed on the interior of the gatefold cover by John Coltrane and drummer Elvin Jones, apparently at the
nightclub Shelly's Manne-Hole on North Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles
. In worn condition, the interior also bears an ownership signature of one "Carl," dated [19]63, and it was he who was perhaps also responsible for the various ink notations around the song listings, identifying tempos ("3/4 medium tempo") etc. The edges and interior seam of the gatefold are split and with old tape affixed around them, evident also on the front and back of the album.  The record is untested but also exhibits signs of extensive wear and it should be noted the album is sold for the collectible nature of the signatures only. Despite the litany of apparent flaws, this well worn copy of
    Coltrane
was evidently loved and indeed carries an unmistakable air of cool nostalgia about it, presenting as an attractive relic of an important moment in the history of jazz.
This extraordinary 1962 studio album historically falls between the Coltrane albums
    Olé Coltrane
    and
    Impressions
, completing a triad of studio efforts that are as definitive as anything Coltrane ever produced, and highly representative of him in his prime.
    As 1962 began, Coltrane
was 35 years old, riding a wave of commercial success in the wake of his hit recording of "My Favorite Things," a waltz tune from the musical
    The Sound Of Music
that Coltrane had turned into, as one writer put it, "a hypnotic Eastern dervish dance." Named by DonwBeat as "Jazzman of the Year," he had recently signed a contract with Impulse Records that gave him some measure of financial security and the ability to expand his artistic horizons, resulting in the large-ensemble album
    Africa/Brass
and his first official concert LP, the surging, exploratory
    Live At The Village Vanguard
    .
1962 was also the year that the final form of what came to be known as Coltrane's "Classic Quartet" took shape, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.
